Claire Perchard has recently launched her own business making preserves, chutneys, cordials and confectionary using ingredients from the family farm in St Martin. Claire told us a bit about running a small business alongside family life on a busy farm.
Hi, my name is Claire Perchard, I am married to Tom and we have 3 young children. I am originally from the UK but we moved back to Jersey in 2012 and Tom now runs the family Dairy farm with his Dad, Robbie. The Farm is called ‘La Ferme’ and is located in St. Martin. We live in the main farmhouse and since I currently make of all my product in our kitchen, I decided to name the business, yep you’ve guessed it, La Ferme Kitchen. It’s a really simple name but I think it has a nice ring to it.
I have been making jams and pickles for several years now but only made piccalilli for the first time 6 months ago. I thought I would enter it into the Autumn show at the RJA&HS as a bit of fun and won first prize! So this has of course made it into my La Ferme Kitchen range.
As a lover of all things sweet I have enjoyed playing around and experimenting with recipes since I was a young girl. I wanted to create something that compliments the farm and experimented with confectionary utilising the Jersey cream, butter and milk.
I’ve always wanted to own my own business but have spent the last 15 years working as a Human Resources Manager. Since having the children and becoming a farmers wife I wanted to do something that I could fit in around family life and my cooking fits in around the school runs and daytime naps!
As a child I used to help my mum and Gran in the kitchen and have always loved cooking. I have been making my own homemade hampers for a number of years now for family members and friends. These have always been well received and thought I would take it to the next level and try to make a successful business out of it.
Claire’s products are available from The Fresh Fish Company on Victoria Pier, La Belle Gourmande in St Aubin, and Classic Herd Farm Shop in St Peter. To place orders or arrange a hamper, contact Claire via her Facebook Page: La Ferme Kitchen.
