Tony Gibson has always been fascinated by working with timber. A few years ago, he found himself looking for work, so decided instead to set up his own small business. TG Timbercraft offers a range of beautiful wooden products from bespoke free standing furniture, to custom built in cabinetry, to lovingly created gift items. Tony tells us more of his story here:
My name is Tony Gibson, I have a small woodwork business called TG Timbercraft, making bespoke furniture. I also create a lot of built in furniture which can be anything from a radiator cover to a made to measure fitted bedroom or kitchen. Also, I make a range of gift items: candle holders, salt and pepper mills, cheese boards etc.
Ever since I can remember I have been working with timber. My father worked wood and I grew up with it. I like everything about it, the touch, the smell of freshly planed timber, and the satisfaction of taking a slice of tree with the bark still attached and finishing up with a beautiful piece of furniture. I believe that great products start with great materials, so I am careful when choosing timber, only the best quality boards are selected.
At the beginning of 2012 I found myself in a redundancy situation, so I thought I would try a venture of my own. Originally, when I set up my business, I planned to produce high quality wooden items both off the peg and made to order. As things took shape I found myself receiving commissions for built in and freestanding pieces of furniture and so I have developed the business to include this sort of work too.
I like to spend a little time each week at my desk, working on furniture designs and ideas and preparing cutting lists. The cutting list contains all the cutting dimensions, angles, joints, etc for each and every component that makes up the project. This sheet of paper becomes the blueprint for the job and is taken into the workshop as a reliable list to work from where all of the geometry, maths and other thinking has already been done. No need to think – just cut, shape and glue. There are, of course, other practical things that have to happen during the week, like sending out invoices, paying the bills etc, but my priority is to be on the tools as much as I can.
It’s hard to say which pieces are the most popular, as I create so much bespoke work. However, coffee tables are always popular, and with built in furniture I am often asked to build cabinets, shelves or display cases into alcoves. With my gift items, candle holders in varying shapes and sizes are always in demand.
