Jèrriais is a language in which Jersey people have exchanged poetry, stories, scandals, beliefs and business. It is a language of lullabies and laughs, satire and swearwords, and so much Jersey history is recorded only in Jèrriais. It is a living language and we look forward to passing it on to generations to come.

L'Office du Jèrriais is the body responsible for the teaching and promotion of Jersey’s native language. It is comprised of the Jèrriais Teaching Service, based at Highlands College, and the Jèrriais Promotion Officer, based at Jersey Museum. The Jèrriais Teaching Service offers opt-in lessons in primary and secondary schools throughout Jersey, as well as adult lessons at Jersey Library and various other locations for every level of adult learner, from beginner to advanced. The Jèrriais Promotion Officer is responsible for promoting the language at Jersey Heritage, translation work, managing social media accounts, supporting Jèrriais teachers and contributing to the rich corpus of texts in Jèrriais.

L’Office du Jèrriais also runs three café conversation groups that are open to all levels of Jèrriais speaker, offering native speakers and learners the opportunity to use the language outside the home and classroom. Sessions take place from 10:30-11:30 on Wednesdays at the Village Tearoom in St Martin, Thursdays at The Yard Café at Jersey Museum in St Helier, and Fridays at Jersey Pearl Café in St Ouen.

L'Office du Jèrriais works alongside Le Don Balleine publications trust to offer a variety of texts and resources for every age group. There is a wide range of publications to cover many interests, including picture books for younger learners and dictionaries, phrase books and academic texts for older enthusiasts. Jèrriais books can be purchased from the bookshop at La Société Jersiaise and online from www.jerriais.org.je.

Businesses, municipal authorities and government departments have been helped by L'Office du Jèrriais to make as much use of our language as possible, from public signage to website translations. Any business that wants to use Jèrriais is welcome to contact L'Office for free assistance.
